  2. DESIGNER'S  CLUB  USER'S  GUIDE

  4. All documentation assumes you have a basic understanding of how to use your computer and the programs you have purchased for it.

  6. BASIC REQUIREMENTS
  7. -------------------
  8. Designer's Club images require application(s) that are compatible with the EPS file format. EPS images are saved as Adobe Illustrator 3.0 files. Any other hardware requirements will be based primarily on the applications you use and the type of final output you plan to produce. For best results, your printer should be PostScript compatible.

The files for the PC users are in an invisible folder on the CD named PC_USERS. Mac users may be able to see this folder in certain applications when opening or placing a file.  DO NOT use the files in this folder on your Mac.  These files are saved in a PC format. If the PC files are used on a Mac, results can be unpredictable.

  14. ART SELECTION

  16. ** Printed Pictorial Index **
  17. This provides thumbnail and file name for each image in the issue.

  19. ** Adobe Fetch **
  20. The Adobe Fetch 1.2 Browser folder contains:
  21. ò The Adobe Fetch 1.2 Browser application
  22. ò An Adobe Fetch Browser catalog of the current month's images
  23. ò A cumulative Adobe Fetch Browser catalog of the current year's images
  24. ò An export file for use with Adobe Fetch 
  25. Each of these is explained below. YOU DO NOT NEED FETCH, OR ANY OF THE ITEMS IN THE ADOBE FETCH 1.2 BROWSER FOLDER, TO USE THE ARTWORK. THE FETCH BROWSER CATALOG IS SIMPLY ANOTHER WAY OF LOCATING AN IMAGE.

  27. Adobe Fetch Browser application: This application allows you to "browse" a catalog of images. You can view thumbnail versions of the images in the catalog, search for images by keywords, preview images, and copy them to your hard drive.

  29. Current month Browser catalog: This catalog contains all the images in the current month's Designer's Club package.

  31. Current year Browser catalog: This catalog contains all the images from January of the current year through the present.

  33. Adobe Fetch export file: If you own Adobe Fetch (a database application that lets you catalog images, movies, and sounds), this export file can be used to create Fetch catalogs. Like the Browser, Fetch allows you to view thumbnail versions of the images, search for images by keywords, preview images, and copy them to your hard drive; in addition, Fetch also allows you to add your own images, movies and sounds to your catalog.

  35. ** Multi-Ad Search **
  36. Because keywords and descriptions are attached to the image files, they can be used with Search. When you Add Files to your catalog, Search will pick up the keywords and descriptions from the image files.

  38. A WARNING TO COLOR USERS
  39. -------------------------
  40. The nature of color in desktop publishing is unpredictable. The way a color image looks on screen does not necessarily reflect the way it will look when it is printed, and different output devices and types of paper may produce different results. We recommend that you contact your service bureau and printer so that they can insure the kind of color reproduction you need.

  42. USING THE CLIP ART
  43. ------------------
  44. ** PAGE LAYOUT PROGRAMS **
  45. Open your page layout program, create a new document and place the EPS file as you would any other images. The following page layout programs are compatible with the EPS file format:
  46.         òPageMaker
  47.         òQuarkXpress
  48.         òReady, Set, Go!
  49.         
  50. ** DRAW PROGRAMS **
  51. Open your draw program and OPEN the EPS file. These images can be manipulated like any other EPS image. The following draw programs are compatible with the EPS file format:
  52.         òAdobe Illustrator
  53.         òFreeHand
  54.         òCanvas
  55. Many of your Designer's Club EPS images are provided as layered illustrations. This means that several elements can be lifted out of a single image and used as stand-alone artwork. In order to pull apart or separate the layers of an EPS file, a PostScript draw program like Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia FreeHand is necessary.
